Teaching of Reading

At St. Joseph’s our overarching aim within the English Curriculum is to promote high standards of literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the written and spoken word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

* read easily, fluently and with good understanding and develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information. We have an excellent stock of books in the classrooms.  We encourage the importance of children reading widely and enjoying books with their peers and family.  Library books are thoroughly recommended for reading to your child when they are learning to read.We hope that this enables them to acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language whilst encouraging them to appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.

 

* write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. The development of writing is also an important aspect of our work. It includes factual writing, creative and personal writing, and all other forms of writing necessary for different purposes.  We aim to achieve progressive competency and accuracy in spelling, punctuation and syntax, and the development of a legible style of handwriting. We teach daily phonics through ‘Read Write Inc’ to encourage competent readers and writers and ensure our classrooms are a literacy rich environment. We also follow the ‘Scholastic Handwriting Scheme’ to ensure fluency and uniformity of handwriting throughout the school.

 

* use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas and are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate. We aim to foster an environment that will encourage development of language by the rich provision of opportunities to interact and communicate with others.  We stress the values of listening and speaking skills, and the opportunity to develop these areas of curriculum is planned into the teacher’s work.  We value the role of drama in the curriculum and provide opportunities for both educational and performance drama to be developed with the children.
